Opportunity to be published

Glenys Mann of Fibrearts Australia is planning to publish a date-less diary. One page would contain an image of your work and a week of undated days on the opposite page. I participated in the Artist Notebook Project that Glenys organised last year, for completion earlier this year. These are now touring to various sites around the country. It was a lot of fun - filling a 120 page A5 visual diary really get your mind humming.

Meeting activity - boxes

This is the box I made as a result of our meeting activity last weekend.

It is not the greatest thing I have ever made - in fact I don't like it very much at all as it is rather 'in-your-face'!

However, it was a great learning activity and very satisfying to test how various yarns and fabrics worked with the stiffened felt I used as the background for the box. I was surprised how easily the fabrics and fibres worked through this type of felt from both sides.

I also learnt a couple of things to remember for next time:

• I had not given enough thought to proportions. Whilst I did think about the placement of elements on the finished box, I didn't consider how big they would appear on the box when finished. Whilst various elements (motifs, colour blocks etc) looked OK on the full piece of felting, some of them became much more dominant and overpowering on the finished box.
  
  
• I used one of the templates from an unfolded commercial box and whilst I am happy with the size and shape, I didn't notice until putting my box together that it had been glued on one of the front corners. This was probably not noticeable on the original cardboard box, but it certainly set me a challenge to work out a way of joining that was not too noticeable. I would much prefer to join at the back of the box.

This was a great activity with lots of potential. Thanks Buffy for proposing it, and for generously bringing all the bits you did for it.

More Exhibition Opportunities

There are a couple of exhibitions coming up with opportunities for all quilters.
The first is the Dare to Differ exhibition from South Australia, with a closing date of 1 July 2011.
The exhibition is open to ALL quilt makers within Australia. A definition of a quilt for this exhibition is that it must be predominantly fibre, and be composed of a least two distinct layers, stitched together throughout the quilt. The exhibition will be held from 30 September – 23 October 2011 at Gallery M.

The second opportunity is for the Australian Quilts in Public Places (AQIPP) exhibition. The closing date is 5 October 2011.
Australian Quilts in Public Places (AQIPP) is an initiative of The Australian Quilters Association Inc. Entries are invited for the 2011 exhibition, which will have a theme of Forest Threads.  The exhibition will be held from 11 November to 21 December 2011 at Box Hill Art Space in Melbourne.

Art Quilt Opportunity

The NSW Quilters Guild co-sponsors an art quilt exhibition every two years, in conjunction with the Manly Art Museum and Gallery. Until now it has been called "The New Quilt", but for 2012 they are taking a new direction. They are choosing to have a curated, themed exhibition with specific, visual selection criteria as the basis of being accepted into the exhibition. The theme is 'Regeneration' .

Meeting today ... we'll have fun playing with chocolate wrappers and foils ... it might be love at first sight, or we may never want to use them again, but how will we know unless we have a go?

Was going to bring this to the meeting on 9th April but I'll be away so am posting it instead. I did the hand for ACT Textile Artists group but then attached it to a background for a 12" square challenge this year with the Yahoo group (Australia NZ Art Quilters)

Gallery pieces

HI Guys, I thought I would show you a piece I did that was in the Watson Gallery 2010. it is 70 x 50cm basted on a canvas frame, so quite large, which is why I have not brought it to the group. the work is on batting which is painted and burnt then embellished, painted, sun bleached and layered. This is the sort of work that I enjoy. Giselle
